Create an obstacle course backyard to keep kids active and engaged all summer long. Set up obstacle courses with tunnels, crawl spaces, balancing beams, swinging ropes and slippery slopes. Kids will build strength, coordination and teamwork skills navigating exciting obstacle courses.
Get Tunnels
Tarps, cardboard boxes, PVC or metal pipes, canvas and duct tape make perfect tunnels for kids to crawl through. Blow up balloons and securely tie them to create colorful tunnels. Tunnels promote motor development and hand-eye coordination.
Include Swings
Nothing gets kids outside like the promise of swinging. Swing ropes, tire swings, rope swings or trapeze bars invite hours of swinging fun. Spot children or set up a swing set for shared swinging bliss. Swings build upper body strength, balance and coordination.
Add Balance Elements
Precariously place wooden beams, pipes, ropes or hula hoops for children to balance walk or teeter across. Have kids role play as tight rope walkers or jugglers walking across tricky beams. Balance obstacles challenge balance, core strength and stability.
Set Slippery Slopes
Create spiral or zig-zag slides using plastic sheeting and wooden boards or PVC pipes for kids to slide down. Use things like cardboard tubes, hula hoops, scooters or ropes for pulling kids back up slippery slopes for repeated sliding fun. Slopes enhance gross motor skills and spatial awareness.
Incorporate Obstacle Stations
Set up a series of obstacles with start and finish points for following obstacle course routes. Time children navigating obstacle courses or set goals to beat time records. Obstacle courses provide mental and physical challenges, independence and teamwork opportunities.
Keep Safe
Ensure any obstacles, equipment or activities are properly secured and kid-safe to prevent injuries. Adult supervision is always important, especially when first setting up or navigating more difficult parts of obstacle courses. Safety gear like helmets, elbow and knee pads should be worn to minimize risks. With some creativity, obstacle courses can provide kids endless backyard enjoyment and adventure!
